Enterprise Wi-Fi

Most Wi-Fi complaints are a design problem, not a hardware problem. Adding another access point to a bad design usually makes it worse.

Why the building is the problem

An aged-care facility built in the 1980s and a club with a concrete-and-steel gaming floor have the same underlying issue: the structure attenuates the signal, and the original installation was designed on a floor plan rather than measured in the room.

Older buildings add brick internal walls, foil-backed insulation, lift shafts, fire doors and long corridors that behave nothing like an open office. The fix starts with a survey — actual measurements, room by room, including the places staff complain about.

What a proper design includes

  • A site survey before anything is quoted, with coverage and interference measured
  • Separated networks — guest, staff, and operational traffic like gaming terminals, handhelds or nurse-call devices, each on its own VLAN. See managed firewall
  • Capacity planning, not just coverage — four hundred member devices in a function room is a density problem a coverage map will not predict
  • Roaming that works, so a care worker walking a corridor or a duty manager crossing the floor does not drop a session at every boundary
  • Guest access with terms, bandwidth limits and no path to your internal network
  • Monitoring, so degradation is visible before it becomes a complaint

Where this gets costly if it is wrong

Handheld devices in aged care and clinical settings are the most demanding case. A care worker completing a medication round on a tablet that keeps dropping coverage will revert to paper, which means the electronic record is incomplete — a clinical governance problem caused by a network one.

Common questions

Do we need to replace all our access points?

Not always. Sometimes the existing hardware is adequate and the placement, channel plan or configuration is wrong. The survey tells us which, and we would rather report that than sell a refresh.
