NEVO Pulse, as the worked example

Pulse is our own client portal, deployed to every NEVO client. It shows devices protected, the value delivered each month, the monthly cost of outstanding risk, the split between preventative and reactive hours, infrastructure and security health scores, and a published five-year ICT capital plan.

We built it because no vendor tool reported on what our service actually commits to. That is the same reason most custom software is worth building — and you can see screenshots of it rather than take the claim on trust.

How we keep it from becoming a liability

Custom software that is undocumented, unmaintained or understood by one person is worse than no custom software. Everything we build is documented, source-controlled, monitored in production, and handed over in a state another party could pick up.

And we will tell you not to build. If an off-the-shelf product covers eighty per cent of the requirement, adopting it and adapting the process is almost always cheaper over five years than building the last twenty per cent.
